John Mahoney was an English-American actor and voice artist. He co-starred as “Martin Crane” in the sitcom Frasier (1993-2004), and as “Lt. Roselli” in the series Chicago Story (1982). His credits include Say Anything (1989), Dan in Real Life (2007), In Treatment, and Hot in Cleveland. Charles John Mahoney was born on June 20, 1940, in Blackpool, England. His father, Reg, worked as a baker, and his mother, Margaret, was a housewife. He had 7 siblings, including Vera and Bernard. Mahoney attended St Joseph’s College, Blackpool. He immigrated to the United States and joined the U.S. Army in his late teens. He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1959. Mahoney earned his BA degree from Quincy University, Illinois. CAREER
Prior to acting, Mahoney worked as a college professor at Western Illinois University. He taught English literature. He also worked as a medical orderly and as a medical journal editor in the 1970s. Mahoney began his acting career in his 30s. He was first exposed to acting at the Stretford Children’s Theatre back in Manchester, England. Years later he would enroll at the St. Nicholas Theatre company. He joined the Steppenwolf Theatre in 1977 and won the Clarence Derwent Award for the most promising newcomer. Mahoney’s early stage credits include The Water Engine, and Orphans. He won a Tony Award in 1986 for his performance in John Guare’s The House of Blue Leaves. Mahoney starred as “Lt. Roselli” in the short-lived NBC drama series Chicago Story (1982). His 1980s film appearances include Tin Men (1987) with Richard Dreyfuss, Moonstruck (1987) with Cher, and Eight Men Out (1988) with John Cusack. He appeared opposite Albert Finney in the HBO TV film, The Image (1990).
Mahoney was cast as “Martin Crane” in the hit NBC sitcom Frasier. His performance earned him a SAG Award and nominations for 2 Emmys and 2 Golden Globe Awards.
