Jonathan Demme was an American filmmaker. He’s directed, produced, and written a wide range of feature films and documentaries. His popular projects include The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993), and Rachel Getting Married (2008). Robert Jonathan Demme was born on February 22, 1944, in Baldwin, New York. His parents were Dorothy and Robert. He had two brothers, Rick and Peter. Demme attended Southwest Miami High School followed by the University of Florida. He dropped out before completing a degree.
CAREER
Demme started out as a film critic for his school’s newspaper during college. He then worked with producer Joseph E. Levine and later as a publicist for director Roger Corman. Demme co-wrote and produced Angels Hard as They Come (1971) and The Hot Box (1972). His directorial debut was the exploitation film, Caged Heat (1974). Other films followed including Crazy Mama (1975), Handle with Care (1977), and Melvin and Howard (1980). Demme directed the romantic war drama, Swing Shift (1984), starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. He won the National Society of Film Critics Award for best documentary for the concert film, Stop Making Sense (1984).
Demme won the Academy Award for best director for the horror-thriller, The Silence of the Lambs (1991). The film stars Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. Demme continued his success with the drama, Philadelphia (1993), which focuses on the AIDS crisis and homophobia. Actor Tom Hanks won his first Oscar for best actor for his role as “Andrew Beckett”. Demme’s other films include Beloved (1998), The Manchurian Candidate (2004) and Rachel Getting Married (2008). He’s also directed a handful of music videos and television shows.
